Empowerment and Community Outreach

The Empowerment and Community Outreach Unit focuses on at-risk youth who are in and out of school, to provide support for them to stay in school, and assist those who are out of school to re-register into an educational program or seek employment. A successful program under this unit is the Suspension Program: a DYS led program that works with youth on suspension from their institutions, to modify behaviours and provide proper skills that would help them in completing their education.

Objectives:

To engage our young people in positive reinforcement activities with the view of replacing the negative influences which contribute to increase violence and crime among youth.

To educate on intervention and proper conflict management relating to street based disputes.

To develop social spaces of participation within the community geared to display youth culture.

To provide at-risk youth with alternative ways of resolving conflict through training.

To train at-risk youth to act as promoters/peacekeepers throughout local communities within our cities and towns as well as our rural areas.
